Protons are successfully accelerated at the J-PARC Linac
Tokai, Japan, 31 January 2007:  A milestone was set by the Linac (linear accelerator) of J-PARC (Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex) on January 24, 2007. Protons were, for the first time, successfully accelerated to the designed energy of the Linac (181 million electron-volts, traveling at about half the speed of light). This marks the first step in commissioning of the high intensity proton accelerator complex, jointly built by the two national institutions, Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) and High Energy Accelerator Research Organization (KEK).

Westborough, MA and Erlangen, Germany, 30 January 2007:  American Superconductor Corporation (NASDAQ: AMSC), a leading energy technologies company, and Siemens AG (NYSE: SI), a global power systems company, announced today commercial-grade performance levels for a medium voltage superconductor surge protection device known as a fault current limiter (FCL). The United States Department of Energy has estimated that the potential market for fault current limiters is several billion dollars over the next 15 years.

New technique for easily identifying explosives in luggage

Osaka, Japan, 22 January 2007:  Scientists in Japan have developed a new technique for sensing explosives in luggage and landmines. The paper, published today in the Institute of Physics journal Superconductor Science and Technology describes how radio waves can be used to identify specific explosives, such as TNT. The new method could be used in future to screen baggage at airports.

Global Science Gateway Agreement Signed in London

London, England, 22 January 2007: Dr. Raymond L. Orbach, Under Secretary for Science of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), yesterday signed an agreement with Lynne Brindley, Chief Executive, the British Library, to partner on the development of a global science gateway.  The gateway would eventually make science information resources of many nations accessible via a single Internet portal.

Delft nano-detector very promising for remote cosmic realms

Delft, Netherlands, January 17, 2007:  A miniscule but super-sensitive sensor can help solve the mysteries of outer space. Cosmic radiation, which contains the terahertz frequencies that the sensors detect, offers astronomers important new information about the birth of star systems and planets. Merlijn Hajenius developed these sensors for Delft University of Technology's Kavli Institute of Nanoscience, in close cooperation with the SRON Netherlands Institute for Space Research.

New MRI Technique Measures Intracranial Pressure in Brain Disorder

Chicago, IL, January 5, 2007:  A new advanced magnetic resonance imaging technique developed at the University of Illinois at Chicago for the diagnosis and treatment of neurological problems, such as Chiari malformations, hydrocephalus and brain injury, will be evaluated for clinical use through a $1.4 million National Institutes of Health Bioengineering Research Partnership grant.

Varian Medical Systems Announces Intent to Acquire ACCEL Instruments GmbH
Alto, CA, January 4:  Varian Medical Systems, Inc., (NYSE: VAR) today announced it has signed an agreement to acquire ACCEL Instruments GmbH, a privately-held supplier of proton therapy systems for cancer treatment and scientific research instruments. The acquisition will enable Varian to offer products for delivering image-guided, intensity modulated proton therapy for selected cancer patients. Varian will invest approximately $30 million to acquire 100 percent of ACCEL, including its debt.
