Protons
are successfully accelerated at the J-PARC Linac
Tokai, Japan, 31 January 2007: A milestone was set by the Linac (linear
accelerator) of J-PARC
(Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex) on January 24, 2007. Protons
were, for the first time, successfully accelerated to the designed energy of the
Linac (181 million electron-volts, traveling at about half the speed of light).
This marks the first step in commissioning of the high intensity proton
accelerator complex, jointly built by the two national institutions, Japan
Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) and High Energy Accelerator Research Organization (KEK).

New technique for easily identifying explosives in luggage

technique for sensing explosives in luggage and landmines. The paper, published
today in the Institute of Physics
journal Superconductor Science and Technology describes how radio waves
can be used to identify specific explosives, such as TNT. The new method could
be used in future to screen baggage at airports.

Announces Intent to Acquire ACCEL Instruments GmbH

Varian Medical Systems, Inc., (NYSE:
VAR) today announced it
has signed an agreement to acquire ACCEL Instruments GmbH, a privately-held
supplier of proton therapy systems for cancer treatment and scientific
research instruments. The acquisition will enable Varian to offer products
for delivering image-guided, intensity modulated proton therapy for selected
cancer patients. Varian will invest approximately $30 million to acquire 100
percent of ACCEL, including its debt.
