Sumitomo Electric Industries announces 180A critical current DI-BSCCO wire performance

Japan, 3 April 2007:  Sumitomo Electric Industries, Ltd. has started shipping samples of its  innovative bismuth (Bi) based high-temperature superconducting (HTS) wire "DI-BSCCO" that has a critical current (Ic) value of at least 180 A. The shipment of mass-produced DI-BSCCO is scheduled to begin at the end of June 2007.

Sumitomo Electric had developed the world's top-level Bi-based HTS wire and participated in several HTS cable demonstration projects including the Albany HTS Cable Project in the United States. The Company has been selling  its high critical current HTS wires (Ic >150 A) in the global market.

In January 2006, Sumitomo Electric developed a HTS wire with the world's  highest critical current performance of at least 200 A. After achieving  performance improvement and cost reduction and establishing the mass- production technology of this HTS wire, Sumitomo Electric started the  shipment of commercial samples of its innovative HTS wire with Ic >180 A (20% improvement from Ic >150 A).

Critical current is the maximum current that can be transmitted in the superconducting state and it is the most important performance value for  a superconducting wire. The improvement of critical current is expected  to result in the improvement of electric power quality and energy  efficiency of various products using superconducting wires, such as  power cables, transformers, motors, generators and magnets. The use of  high critical current superconducting wires reduces the number of wires  used in these applied products, and hence is expected to contribute to  improving the price competitiveness of the products.

"Superconductor Week
has a three-fold mission:
to advance the goals of our readers by a critical perspective on low- and high- Tc superconductors and cryogenics; to promote the industry by spreading information and insight to the broadest possible audience; and to provide
a platform for the free exchange of ideas and news within the superconductivity community."
