Sumitomo Electric Industries achieves new record "World's highest critical current performance of 210A"

Osaka, Japan, 7 May 2007:   Sumitomo Electric is excited to announce a new record achievement of 210A critical  current at 77K with our high temperature superconducting (HTS) DI-BSCCO wire. This new developmental milestone is a result of our continued efforts to meet the market demand for higher performing, lower cost superconducting wires.

Sumitomo Electric Industries, Ltd. achieved this new world record product development during research trials and confirmed manufacturability through pilot production techniques. "The important thing is that 210A DI-BSCCO wire was achieved by mass production methods, not by laboratory equipment." says Dr.Ken-ichi Sato, General Manager, Superconductivity.

After achieving this performance improvement, Sumitomo Electric continues production development to provide commercial production of 210A DI-BSCCO wire in the coming months.

Since Sumitomo Electric announced and started the shipment of commercial samples of 180A DI-BSCCO wire in March 2007, strong response by HTS engineers and scientists suggests that higher ampacity HTS wires will enable wider industrial and commercial use in new and existing applications.

The increase of critical current enables improvement of electric power  quality and energy efficiency of various products using superconducting wires, such as power cables, transformers, motors, generators and magnets. The use of high critical current superconducting wires reduces the number of wires used in these applied products and therefore provides lower costs.

"Superconductor Week
has a three-fold mission:
to advance the goals of our readers by a critical perspective on low- and high- Tc superconductors and cryogenics; to promote the industry by spreading information and insight to the broadest possible audience; and to provide
a platform for the free exchange of ideas and news within the superconductivity community."
