Call for HFIR, SNS proposals at Oak Ridge National Laboratory

Oak Ridge, TN, 5 July 2007:   The Neutron Scattering Science Division at the Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory has announced a call for proposals for experiments at both the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR) and the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS). This call includes six HFIR instruments and three at SNS.

HFIR instruments are: Ames Lab Triple Axis (HB 1A); Triple-Axis Spectrometers (HB 1 and HB 3); Residual Stress (HB 2B); SANS (CG 2); and Bio-SANS (CG 3).

SNS instruments are: Backscattering Spectrometer (BL 2); Magnetism Reflectometer (BL 4A); Liquids Reflectometer (BL 4B)

The electronic proposal submission system is now open  for this call, which will cover the experimental period at HFIR and SNS beginning November 2007; the call is open until 6 a.m. EDT, Monday, July 16.

For details concerning proposal submission and instrument capabilities, visit the ORNL Neutron Sciences website at http://neutrons.ornl.gov/. This website has specific information (along with names of scientific contacts) about each of the above-mentioned instruments.

In addition, there is an opportunity for earlier experiment time at three HFIR instruments. Proposals for the three triple-axis spectrometers will be considered for HFIR cycle 410 (beginning August 2007) if the proposals are received by 6 a.m. Monday, June 18. Proposals received after this date (until July 16) for these HFIR instruments will be considered for cycles later in the fall of this year.

All proposals will be reviewed for feasibility, safety, and the potential for high-impact science. Users of approved experiments must complete certain access and training requirements prior to beginning their experiments.
