American Superconductor Achieves Performance Levels Required for Commercial Electromagnetic Coils Utilizing New 348 Superconductors
Seattle, WA, August 29:  American Superconductor Corporation (NASDAQ:AMSC), a leading energy technologies company, announced today at the Applied Superconductivity Conference that it has achieved levels of magnetic, electrical, thermal and mechanical performance required for commercial electromagnetic coils utilizing its proprietary second generation (2G) high temperature superconductor (HTS) wire. Electromagnetic coils are the core component of virtually all electrical products beyond power cables.

JLab Cryogenics Innovation Saves $1,000/Day
Newport News, VA, August 29:  A new process invented by Jefferson Lab engineers has revolutionized the way helium cryogenic plants work, saving electricity costs at several scientific research facilities. The cycle requires very few or no new components and nearly doubles the lifetime of refrigeration equipment, while improving system reliability, availability, stability and efficiency. Although the benefits of the process are fully realized for new plants, portions of the new process have already been demonstrated on existing systems with significant results.

Conference on Future Energy to be Held September 22-24
Washington, DC, August 29:  As the the threat of global climate change caused by fossil fuels looms on the horizon, remedies for future energy technologies are being presented by Integrity Research Institute at a two-day conference. David Goodwin, from the US Department of Energy, will give a report on the government's fission and fusion research.

Penn researchers to get 7 Tesla whole-body MRI system
Philadelphia, PA, August 28:  Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine will soon be armed with a new, cutting-edge technological tool in the field of radiology - a 7 Tesla whole-body Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) system. Penn's Department of Radiology will become the first in the Greater Philadelphia region to acquire one of these ultra high-field scanners. Only a handful of them are in operation elsewhere in the United States.

Tokyo, Japan, August 28:  Varian, Inc. (Nasdaq:VARI) today announced the introduction of its 400-MR magnetic resonance spectrometer. German Federal President Horst Köhler Visits FLASH, DESY’s Worldwide Unique X-Ray Laser Facility
Hamburg, Germany, August 23:  On the first stop of his Hamburg visit, German Federal President Horst Köhler came to the German Electron Synchrotron DESY this morning, where he took a tour of the new X-ray laser facility FLASH. “With his visit, Federal President Köhler acknowledges a worldwide unique pioneering facility that has been available in Hamburg for researchers from various natural sciences for over a year. FLASH not only plays a pioneering role for the superconducting accelerator technology. FLASH also lays the foundation for completely new insights into the structure and dynamics of the nanoworld,” said Professor Albrecht Wagner, Chairman of the DESY Board of Directors.

European Commission outlines proposed Joint Undertaking for the European contribution to the ITER fusion energy project
Brussels, Belgium,August 22: Today the Commission has published proposals for the creation of a Joint Undertaking to provide the European contribution to the ITER international fusion energy project.  The Joint Undertaking will be based in Barcelona and should be up and running by the first half of 2007.

Latham, NY, August 18:  Intermagnetics General Corporation (Nasdaq: IMGC) today announced that the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has declared effective Intermagnetics' proxy statement for the acquisition of Intermagnetics by Philips Holding USA Inc., subsidiary of Koninklijke Philips Electronics, N.V. (NYSE: PHG, AEX: PHI). The merger was announced by Philips and Intermagnetics on June 15, 2006.

Sam Aronson Named Director of Brookhaven National Lab
Upton, NY, August 18:  The Board of Directors of Brookhaven Science Associates (BSA) announced today that Interim Laboratory Director Dr. Samuel Aronson has been named as the new Director of Brookhaven National Lab (BNL). BSA manages BNL for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). DOE also approved Dr. Aronson's candidacy.

High Profile Superconducting Super Collider Project from Early 90's Sees New Life as Post 9/11 High-Tech, Secure Data Center

Dallas, TX, August 16:  The multi-billion dollar Superconducting Super Collider (SSC), located south of Dallas, Texas and funded by the U.S. Department of Energy, will see new life as a high-tech, secure data center. Collider Data Center LLC, a Dallas-based company, along with investment partner J.B. Hunt, has purchased 135-acres, 215,000 square feet of buildings, and access to over 17 miles of rock and concrete encased tunnels 250 feet beneath the Earth's surface.

NIH funds 14 High-End Instrumentation grants: Nearly $22 million will enable the purchase of cutting-edge research equipment
Bethesda, MD, August 15:  The National Center for Research Resources (NCRR), a part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), announced today it will provide $21.5 million for 14 High-End Instrumentation (HEI) grants that will fund cutting-edge equipment required to advance biomedical research and increase knowledge of the underlying causes of human disease. Awarded to research institutions around the country, the one-time grants support the purchase of sophisticated instruments costing more than $750,000.

Brookhaven Lab's Anatoli Zelenski Wins 2006 Veksler Award from the Russian Academy of Sciences
Upton, NY, August 11:  Anatoli Zelenski, a physicist at the U.S. Department of Energy's Brookhaven National Laboratory, and Alexander Belov of the Institute for Nuclear Research in Moscow, are recipients of the 2006 Veksler Award from the Russian Academy of Sciences. This top Russian award in accelerator physics recognized the two scientists for outstanding achievements in "the development of high-intensity polarized ion sources for high energy accelerators.”

Hauppauge, NY, August 2:  As in the midst of a scorching heat wave, and part of its commitment to ensure economical, safe and reliable electricity to its customers, the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) held a Groundbreaking Ceremony today in Holbrook to announce the construction phase of the world's largest and highest-voltage superconductor electric transmission cable system. The 138,000 volt (138kV) cable system, nearly one-half mile in length, will be the world's first superconductor cable installed in a live grid at transmission voltages and will carry more power than all previous high temperature superconductor (HTS) cable demonstrations combined.

This system at the Albany High-Temperature Superconducting (HTS) Cable Project uses high-temperature superconducting cable manufactured by Sumitomo Electric Industries, Ltd.
