American Superconductor Selects Japanese Distributor for Second Generation High Temperature Superconductors

Suzuki Shokan Co. Ltd. to sell 344 Superconductors in Growing Japanese market

Tsukuba, Japan, Oct. 24:  American Superconductor Corporation (NASDAQ:AMSC) announced at the 18th International Symposium on Superconductivity today that it has selected Suzuki Shokan Co. Ltd. as its distribution partner for 344 superconductors in the Japanese market.  Japan represents one of the world's largest markets for superconductor wires for applications in the power transmission, industrial, medical and transportation sectors.  The Japanese government has recently increased funding for the development of products that utilize second generation (2G) high temperature superconductor (HTS) wires.  American Superconductor's "344 superconductors" are 2G HTS wires that have enhanced performance and properties in industry standard HTS wire dimensions.

" Japan represents a substantial opportunity for sales growth for 344 superconductors," said Greg Yurek, president and CEO of American Superconductor. "We have worked successfully with Suzuki Shokan on a number of projects over the last ten years and have developed a strong business relationship with them. Their knowledge of the Japanese market, their expertise and track record in selling products based on advanced technologies make them a great choice to act as our distributor for 344 superconductors in this key market."

Founded in March 1905, Suzuki Shokan supplies gases, materials, state-of-the-art industrial equipment, including cryogenic equipment and related products to customers in Japan .  Suzuki Shokan is also a distributor of HTS electromagnets for New Zealand based HTS-110, of which AMSC is a shareholder.  Electromagnets produced by HTS-110 are sold worldwide and are Powered by AMSC(tm).

"We are very excited about AMSC's 344 superconductors because this is the right product at the right time to meet the demand for superconductor applications development and commercial products in Japan ," said Yoshihiko Suzuki, president and CEO of Suzuki Shokan.  "We are eager to continue our relationship with AMSC and together increase sales of 344 superconductors to meet the growing market demand in Japan ."
