Vancouver, BC, December 1: Following the December 1st meeting of the
TRIUMF Board of Management,
Dr. Feridun Hamdullahpur, Board Chair, made the following announcement.
“I am very pleased to announce that today the TRIUMF Board of Management
unanimously approved the appointment of Dr. Nigel Lockyer as the next Director
of TRIUMF. Dr. Lockyer comes to TRIUMF from the University of Pennsylvania where
he is a Professor of Physics. He brings to TRIUMF a wealth of experience and
knowledge along with strong management and interpersonal skills. He will assume
the Directorship on May 1, 2007.”
Dr. Lockyer’s research has focused on high-energy particle experiments at the
energy frontier with a keen interest in testing symmetries, and on the study of
the heaviest quarks, with special emphasis on the bottom quark. His research has
been conducted with the CDF experiment at Fermilab, located near Chicago. In
recent years, his research has included lepton number and R-Parity violating
supersymmetry searches as well as accelerator research aimed at the
International Linear Collider. His professional service has included chairing
the Grant Selection Committee of NSERC in 2003 and the CFI Review in 2006. In
addition, he was a member of the NSERC Review Committees for the OPAL, BaBar and
ATLAS experiments. Dr. Lockyer also served as an ex- officio member of the
Agency Committee on TRIUMF in 2003.
Dr. Hamdullahpur went on to thank the Search Committee for their efforts and
also thanked the TRIUMF community for their input into this very important task.
TRIUMF is Canada’s national laboratory for nuclear and particle physics and
related sciences. Based in Vancouver, TRIUMF serves a large scientific community
with its world-class facilities. It also provides scientific and engineering
leadership and support to Canadian scientists enabling them to be major
collaborators in international experiments at the forefront of scientific
research. TRIUMF has an excellent record of encouraging the use of expertise
gained through its scientific activities for the greater benefit of society.
