HYPRES Receives $2 Million in SBIR Phase II Plus
Contracts from DOD
HYPRES has received more than $2M in Small Business
Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase II Plus modifications
to existing contracts from the United States Army. The
Department of Defense funding will support the
development of superconducting microelectronics (SME)
technology for SATCOM and Joint Tactical Radio System (JTRS)
and Signals Intelligence (SIGINT) applications. HYPRES
recently delivered a prototype superconducting HF-VHF
all digital receiver to the U.S. Navy (see
issue 1921).
A $494,000 12-month award will go to developing a
working prototype cryocooler and cryopackaging that will
provide the 4 to 5K operating temperature required for
HYPRES’ niobium based RF electronics. Lockheed Martin
Missiles & Space is building the device, and will
receive much of the funding (see http://www.superconductorweek.com/recent_headlines.htm#1922).
Lockheed has reportedly presented HYPRES with a plan for
mass-producing the coolers at relatively low cost.
Previous funding had supported the process of selecting
a cryocooler developer, which included design reviews
from Lockheed, Raytheon Company, and Sunpower, Inc (see
issue 1822).
The remaining $1.6M in awards goes toward the
development of superconducting digital communications
components.
